Sexual health is important- so let’s start talking about it.

At Mohini we believe that education is power. There are millions of misconceptions about sex, consent, periods, the reproductive system, contraception, pregnancy, diseases- the list is infinite. This problem is magnified in South Asian communities that, historically, are more rooted in traditional values which result in a lack of communication between parents and children concerning these sensitive subjects. While you might have received a general “sex talk” from your parents and a speech about abstinence from your teachers, the truth is that South Asian American teens are ill-equipped to handle the complicated and ever-changing world of sex.
Whether you are sexually active or have no intention of being so, are a student, a parent, an adult, a teenager or anything else, you have a right to advocate for your own sexual health and deserve clarity when it comes to information. Mohini hopes to provide a place for this information, and take it a step further by actually providing cheap or ideally free contraceptives, medication, and tests.
While all of this might seem like wishful thinking, the truth is that South Asians have come a long way in America and have carved a niche for ourselves despite our small population. It’s important to continue this level of community and support even through more vulnerable avenues. Mohini is the first step in a long road of change, but in a resilient community like ours, anything is possible.
